Frequently asked questions
Useful information to help you choose products and equipment with greater confidence.
How do you take measurements for a fencing uniform?
Measure the body over light clothing, keeping the tape close but not tight. The usual measurements are height, chest, waist and hips; some breeches may also require leg length.
Do not use a generic conversion. Open the product page and select “Size Guide”. The chart and measuring method are specific to the brand, model and men’s, women’s or children’s fit.
Which garments make up a complete fencing uniform?
A complete fencing uniform normally includes jacket, breeches, protective plastron, socks and glove. A mask, shoes and, depending on the weapon, a lamé or other specific components are also required.
The exact equipment depends on the athlete’s age, level of activity and the requirements applied by the club and competitions.
What is the purpose of a fencing plastron?
The fencing plastron, worn underneath the jacket, adds a protective layer over the most exposed areas of the torso and weapon arm.
It should be the correct size, should not create bulky folds and must cover the area intended by the model and applicable rules.
What is the difference between 350N and FIE 800N fencing uniforms?
The difference is the puncture resistance level of the fabric, under CE EN 13567:
- 350N (Level 1): for basic activity and training.
- FIE 800N (Level 2): required in FIE-homologated competitions.
39SPORT offers both levels: 350N for base-level practice, 800N for competition. The Newton value refers to jacket and trousers, not the mask. Clothing is available under the FWF brand and 39SPORT's own Alfafencing line. Sizes follow chest circumference: men from 44 (88 cm) to 58 (116 cm); women 38-42; children by height 140-170 cm. The jacket must be chosen right- or left-handed according to the weapon hand.
Are fencing sizes the same for every brand?
No. Fit, measurement ranges and conversions vary between manufacturers and sometimes between models from the same brand.
Example: an FWF size 48 is not automatically equivalent to an AF size 48. The two charts may associate the same labelled size with different body measurements and proportions.
For each item, use the “Size Guide” button on the product page and follow the measuring method specified for that model.
What should you do when your measurements fall between two sizes?
When a measurement falls between two sizes, automatically choosing the larger size is not always correct. Consider the model’s fit, the type of item and the key measurement: chest for jackets, waist and hips for breeches, hand for gloves, face or head for masks and foot length for shoes.
Example: in the AF glove chart, an 18 cm hand falls between size 7, listed for 17.5 cm, and size 7.5, listed for 19 cm. The choice also depends on the required fit and the shape of the hand.
First consult the “Size Guide” on the product page. If uncertainty remains, send 39SPORT all measurements and the product code before placing the order.
Does the FWF 800N fencing uniform include a jacket and trousers, and is it suitable for all weapons?
Yes. The set includes a jacket and trousers and is suitable for épée, foil and sabre. Both comply with the FIE 800N standard and are CE EN13567 Level 2 certified. The jacket and trousers can be selected in different sizes; the final price updates automatically based on the selected sizes.
