Come si prendono le misure per giacche e pantaloni tecnici
Size is chosen on body measurements, not the garment. The main measurements are chest, waist and hips (for trousers also the seat and inseam length), taken with a soft tape, snug but not tight.
Each brand has its own chart: for example, on a men's jacket, the chest runs roughly from about 78-84 cm for XS up to 112-120 cm for XXL, but values differ between Ferrino, Camp and other brands. Always compare your measurements with the chosen product's chart.
How does the layering system work in the mountains
The layering system lets you adjust protection to weather and effort. Three levels:
- Base layer: worn against the skin, wicks sweat and keeps you dry.
- Mid layer: fleece or softshell, retains heat.
- Shell: waterproof, windproof jacket, protects from rain and wind.
You add or remove layers according to conditions: the benefit is flexibility, instead of one heavy garment.
What is the difference between a softshell and a hardshell jacket
The two jackets serve different purposes:
- Softshell: stretchy, breathable and windproof, water-repellent but not fully waterproof. Ideal for dynamic activity in dry weather or light rain.
- Hardshell: stiff, with a waterproof membrane (like Gore-Tex), protects from driving rain and snow. Less stretchy, worn as an outer layer.
They are often used together: softshell as mid layer, hardshell as shell when weather worsens.
What do water column and breathability of a jacket mean
These are the two parameters that measure a waterproof jacket:
- Water column: shows how waterproof the fabric is, measured in millimetres (mm). The higher the value, the more it resists water pressure; from about 10,000 mm up is considered good waterproofing for outdoor use.
- Breathability: shows how much vapour the fabric lets out (often in g/m²/24h). A high value avoids internal condensation during effort.
A good technical jacket balances the two. Exact figures are in the individual product page.
How do I choose rainwear
Effective rainwear combines waterproofing (adequate water column), taped seams that stop water passing through, and breathability so you don't stay wet from sweat inside.
For outdoor use, weight and packability also matter (a jacket that fits in the pack), an adjustable hood and closable cuffs. The choice depends on activity intensity and climate.
How do I wash and care for technical clothing
Technical clothing should be washed with specific detergents, without fabric softener (which clogs the fabric's pores and reduces breathability) and without bleach. Low temperatures and gentle spin.
Garments with a waterproof membrane keep their performance if washed correctly; the external water-repellent treatment (DWR) is reactivated with gentle heat (low-temperature tumble dry or iron with a cloth) or restored with specific products when water no longer beads on the surface.
