How should a fencing uniform be washed, stored and checked for replacement?
The jacket, breeches and plastron should be washed according to the manufacturer’s care label. Fasten hook-and-loop closures and zips, separate any electrical components and use a programme suitable for the fabric.
The uniform should be completely dry before storage. Wear may result from frequent or intensive use, friction, sweat, moisture and repeated washing. High temperatures, aggressive detergents, tumble drying, contact with hook-and-loop fasteners or storing the garment while still damp may accelerate deterioration of fabrics, stitching, elastic components and padding.
A jacket or pair of breeches should be replaced if there are tears, open stitching, deep abrasion, unreliable fastenings or heavily thinned fabric. Check the underarm area, crotch, knees, zips, hook-and-loop closures and other high-stress areas regularly.
Can FWF and AF fencing jackets and breeches be combined?
Yes, jackets and breeches from different brands can be combined, but the fit must be checked carefully. FWF and AF sizes are not automatically equivalent.
Example: an FWF size 48 jacket should not automatically be combined with AF size 48 breeches simply because the same number is shown: the corresponding charts may specify different measurements and proportions.
Before purchasing, consult both size guides and make sure the garments provide correct overlap, freedom of movement and comfort during fencing.
