Frequently asked questions
Useful information to help you choose products and equipment with greater confidence.
How should a fencing mask be cleaned and maintained?
A fencing mask should be cleaned according to the manufacturer’s instructions, avoiding treatments that could damage the mesh, bib, conductive surfaces or fastening systems. Removable padding may be taken out and washed separately when this is allowed for the model.
39SPORT recommends allowing the mask to dry completely after use, checking the mesh, stitching, elastic straps and rear tongue regularly, and never storing it wet inside the fencing bag.
When should a fencing mask be replaced?
A fencing mask should be replaced when the mesh is deformed, wires are broken, significant corrosion is present, the bib or stitching is damaged, or the fastening systems are no longer reliable. A mask that appears intact may also need inspection after a heavy impact or prolonged use.
39SPORT can assess the visible condition of the mask and replaceable components, but a mask with structural damage must not be repaired informally or used for training or competition.
What is a fencing mask cord used for?
A fencing mask cord connects the conductive part of the mask to the lamé in systems that require it, particularly foil and sabre. The connection must be secure and compatible with the weapon configuration.
39SPORT offers dedicated mask cords and accessories. A traditional epee mask does not use the same connection; for modular foil–epee masks, check the configuration in which the mask will be used.
